Summoners raise $480,000 for Make-A-Wish
A year ago, RIOT GAMES and its very powerful and generous community supported the Red Cross Japan Earthquake and Tsunami relief efforts. Well this year, they are at it again and asked for our help to support a fellow summoner Joe, a vivid League of Legends player. Joe has a rare type of cancerous bone tumor called “Ewing’s Sarcoma” that also affects thousands of children around the world. The 17-year-old first joined the ranks of League of Legends a few years ago with some of his friends, and uses the game as a way to stay connected and positive as he undergoes treatment.
A few months back, RIOT started working with the Make-A-Wish foundation to surprise Joe by inviting him and his dad out to their Santa Monica headquarters to spend the day with the guys who make his favourite game.
Being so inspired at Joe’s courage and positive attitude, RIOT decided to help out and give back to the Make-A-Wish foundation to help them make more children’s wishes come true.
For a period of time (May 4th – May 18th) RIOT decided that they would lower the price of Joe’s favourite champion “Jax” and his “Jaximus” skin by 50 percent and donate 100 percent of profits to the foundation.
Since the start of the fundraiser, more than 140,000 summoners participated, totaling more than $480,000 USD in sales, 100 percent of which will go to Make-A-Wish America and Make-A-Wish International in Joe’s name. Each purchase made helps Make-A-Wish impact thousands of children around the world with life-threatening medical conditions.
Since the foundation’s founding in 1980, 280,000 wishes have been granted and it now serves children in 48 countries. All funds raised will fully benefit Make-A-Wish America and Make-A-Wish International to help keep putting smiles on the faces of sick children throughout the world.
As a donor myself, It’s great to know the League of Legends community has a lot of heart and I will be looking forward to seeing more charity events in the future.
